CDP-Choline

Research ChemicalExtensive Research

Also known as: Citicoline · Cytidine Diphosphate-Choline

A naturally occurring nootropic that provides both choline and cytidine for acetylcholine synthesis, neuroprotection, and enhanced phospholipid membrane repair.

Overview

CDP-Choline (Citicoline) is an endogenous nucleotide that serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine, a major component of neuronal cell membranes. When taken as a supplement, CDP-Choline is hydrolyzed into choline and cytidine, which are then absorbed and recombined in the brain. The choline component supports acetylcholine synthesis, while cytidine is converted to uridine, which enhances synaptic plasticity and phospholipid synthesis. CDP-Choline has been extensively studied in clinical trials for stroke recovery, traumatic brain injury, cognitive decline, and glaucoma.

It is approved as a prescription drug in many countries for neurological conditions. In health optimization, it is valued for its dual mechanism of providing both the neurotransmitter precursor (choline) and the membrane repair substrate (cytidine/uridine).

Mechanism of Action

Hydrolyzed to choline and cytidine in the gut. Choline supports acetylcholine synthesis via ChAT. Cytidine is converted to uridine, which enhances phosphatidylcholine synthesis for membrane repair. Also increases dopamine receptor density in the striatum and modulates glutamate release.
